HUME CREEK ARABIANS

Breeding for Performance and Temperament

STUD PROFILE

After fifteen years of breeding Arabians, we have  decided to wind down our operation.  We have sold our GLEN ORTON property of 2,000 acres and have moved to 100 acre property near Uralla, New South Wales. Earlier in 2008, we relocated three of our beloved broodmares; Arabian Park Royale  has a new home near Inverell. Chatari and Arjai Jacinta will be moving together to a stud near Oberon, New South Wales. We are very sad to see our girls go but we are happy in the knowledge they have found loving homes. We still have some lovely young mares and geldings for sale and encourage you to browse through our sale pages.

Our Stud began in 1992 when we relocated from five acres in Sydney to 520 acres at Biala in the Southern Tablelands of N.S.W. In 2002 we left the snowy winters behind and moved to just over 2,000 acres at Coolatai in North West New South Wales.

The property was run as a commercial cattle enterprise, running 200 cows and calves on good black soil with plenty of hills and some very rough terrain. All of our stock work   was done on horseback and this is certainly where the Arabian excels! None of our horses are shod and they had no problems powering up and down the rocky country, they went all day and came back fresh, never a sore foot or stone bruise.

As with the large majority of New South Wales, the ongoing drought  hit this region hard. The tough Arabian manages very well for most of the year with handfeeding of the horses usually restricted to winter time, when the frosts are frequent and good pasture is virtually non existent. If we were lucky enough to receive good rains in summer and early spring, grass was abundant and although mainly native pasture, the horses bloomed during this period.

We do not attend too many shows now due to the distance to large towns, so our horses were almost exclusively used as working horses on the property. We do however, still support our close local shows each year and enjoy them very much. Our committment to breeding quality riding horses has not diminished but the drought of the past few years and the lack of time has caused us to reduce the number of foals bred each year .

The horses ran in large paddocks - up to 200 acres. The youngsters grew up as they should, with plenty of room to move and stretch out for a gallop, lots of natural obstacles to navigate all of which helps build and strengthen their muscles, ligaments, tendons and bones. Quite a few of our horses are now competing successfully in endurance, our property is certainly the place to raise tough horses!

We start our youngsters under saddle here at home and have found that they are all easy, willing to please horses with great attitude. They are taken out on long rides early and we do believe they enjoy these rides and are happy to accept most things they encounter. They quickly adapt to the various wildlife that share their paddocks, kangaroos, wallabies and the like. The cattle are often around the house paddocks so the horses are not upset nor afraid of the stock when asked to commence mustering. Horses love the cattle work and we have found it to be a great confidence builder for young horses.

We firmly believe that the Arabian Horse is first and foremost a riding horse, he must be confident, have excellent feet and legs, have a body built to ride and be trusting and bonded to his humans. We researched Australian horses and their bloodlines and in selecting horses for our stud, we concentrated our search on proven performance bloodlines. In doing so, we were introduced to Arjai Summitt (Ralvon Pilgrim x Arjai Tammie)- "The Moving Machine" - who, at the time was the leading sire of performance horses in Australia. Summitt captivated us with his outstanding conformation, wonderful head and eye and of course, his magical movement. We purchased his son "River Oak Fame" for his length of rein and hip, his sound, balanced body and his very sweet temperament. Fame is out of the True Fame daughter Dynasty Lamech (x Dunwingeri Farhlima).

Along with Fame, we purchased the mares, River Oak Silhouette (Arabian Park Triumph x Ralvon Royal Serene) and Chatari (Count Chatain x Qatari). We then purchased Arabian Park Royale (Arabian Prk Faraz x Arabian Park Ruling Queen) and a few years on, we added Arjai Jacinta (Ralvon Pilgrim x Royal Jann) and Formosa Park Musette  (Estashan imp Ger. x Chip Chase Murina) We already had a non registered part bred mare Hume Creek Shadow who is a classified Australian Saddle Pony. Shadow was purchased for our children to ride and spent many years in Pony Club and competing at local shows and gymkhanas.

We also decided that we would limit our breedings each year, so that all the horses would continue to receive the attention they deserve. Fourteen years later we can look back and be proud of our achievements. Fame has and continues to produce  wonderful riding horses both purebred and derivative. His foals all possess outstanding temperaments, good movement, easy to handle and train, with a very real love of human company.
